Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
-
Yes. A Mat Pilates Certification is required before progressing into SPRING’s Reformer Certification, as the program builds on the movement principles, anatomy knowledge and foundational teaching skills developed through Mat training.
If you’re completing your Mat Certification with SPRING, you can progress into Reformer once you’ve completed your Mat Teaching Labs.
-
You’re very welcome to join the Reformer Certification.
To make sure all students enter with shared foundations, you’ll complete the SPRING Bridging Program at least two weeks before your Reformer Teaching Labs begin. It’s a supportive, self-paced way to align your previous training with SPRING’s teaching philosophy, anatomy foundations, cueing approach and movement principles so you feel fully prepared to continue into Reformer.
-
The Bridging Program is designed for students who completed their Mat training outside of SPRING.
It covers the foundations of SPRING’s teaching philosophy, anatomy, cueing approach and movement principles so you can step into Reformer training with confidence.
The Bridging Program is $400 and must be completed at least two weeks before your Reformer Teaching Labs begin.
If you completed the SPRING Mat Certification, you do not need to complete the Bridging Program.
-
Personal Reformer experience isn’t required, but we recommend having around 25 hours of Reformer classes before starting.
This will help you feel more comfortable with the equipment, spring changes, setup and movement before you begin learning how to teach them, and will support a smoother transition into your Teaching Labs and logbook work.
-
You’ll enroll in a specific Reformer cohort at your chosen SPRING Home Studio.
Once your enrollment and payment are complete, you’ll receive access to your Phase 1 online learning so you can begin preparing before your in-person Teaching Labs.
If your schedule changes, you may request a deferral to a later cohort within your 12-month access window, subject to SPRING’s Deferment Policy.

Most students complete their hours by:
Renting studio time at local Pilates studios
Booking practice sessions at SPRING Home Studios where available
Using Reformers at gyms or community studios
Renting, borrowing or purchasing a home Reformer
If a home setup feels right for you, foldable Reformers are often available for approximately $250–$300, and rentals may be available for approximately $40–$50 per week, depending on your location.
You don’t need to own a Reformer to succeed, but having reliable access to one will make completing your practical hours much easier.
-
Your Reformer Certification includes 70 logbook hours, designed to help you turn what you’re learning into real practical experience.

You don’t need to own a Reformer to complete your practice teaching hours.
Most students use a combination of options, including:
Booking practice time at local Pilates studios
Using Reformers at gyms or community studios
Booking practice sessions at their SPRING Home Studio, where available
Renting or borrowing a Reformer
Using a suitable home Reformer
If you choose a home setup, foldable Reformers are often available for approximately $250–$300, and rentals may be available for approximately $40–$50 per week, depending on your location.
Home Studio access and associated fees vary by location, so your studio will provide information about the options available to your cohort. Our Student Success Team can also help you explore equipment-access options based on where you live.
-
To graduate from your Reformer Certification, you’ll complete:
Your Phase 1 Core Knowledge Check
All required online coursework
70 logbook hours
A written exam
A practical teaching assessment
Your final professional teaching portfolio
You’ll receive clear instructions, assessment rubrics and guidance throughout the program so you always know what’s expected and what comes next.
-
That’s okay. Assessments are designed to demonstrate readiness to teach, not to expect perfection on your first attempt.
If you don’t meet the required standard on your first practical assessment, you’ll receive feedback on what needs further development and have the opportunity to complete a reassessment. Your first assessment attempt is included in your course, with a fee applying to additional assessment attempts.
How the Program Works
-
SPRING’s Reformer Certification follows a three-phase pathway designed to take you from building your foundations to confidently applying what you’ve learned in real teaching situations.
Phase 1: CORE
Begin with self-paced online learning covering safety, equipment setup, SPRING alignments, foundational repertoire, spring mechanics and key teaching concepts. You’ll complete your Phase 1 coursework and Core Knowledge Check before progressing into your Teaching Labs.Phase 2: TEACHING LABS
Bring your learning onto the equipment through immersive, in-person Teaching Labs at your SPRING Home Studio. You’ll practice 165+ Reformer and Jumpboard exercises, cueing, sequencing, screenings, adaptations and inclusive teaching, with real-time guidance and feedback from your SPRING educator. Online learning continues alongside this phase to help you deepen and integrate what you’re practicing in the studio.Phase 3: CAREER READY
Complete your logbook hours, remaining online coursework, professional teaching portfolio and final assessments as you prepare to step confidently into professional teaching environments. -
Your weekly schedule will vary depending on which phase of the program you’re completing.
During CORE, you’ll work through self-paced online learning, movement practice and reflection in the SPRING Learning Hub. During your Teaching Labs, you’ll attend scheduled in-person sessions with your educator and cohort. During CAREER READY, you’ll work more independently as you complete your observation, self-practice, practice teaching, assessments and portfolio requirements.
The program is designed to give you structure while still allowing you to fit much of your learning around work, family and everyday life.
-
Reformer Teaching Labs take place in person at select SPRING Home Studios across the U.S. and Australia.
When choosing your Reformer cohort, you’ll select the Home Studio where you’ll attend your Teaching Labs. Current locations and upcoming cohort dates are listed in the Find Your Reformer Certification section above.
-
Teaching Labs are practical, hands-on sessions where you bring what you’ve learned online onto the Reformer and build confidence teaching real people.
You’ll practice exercises, equipment setup, spring changes, cueing, sequencing, modifications and teaching techniques with guidance from experienced SPRING educators. You’ll also have plenty of opportunities to teach, observe your peers and receive real-time feedback in a supportive environment.
-
We intentionally keep our Reformer cohorts small so you have plenty of opportunities to practice teaching, ask questions, work directly with the equipment and receive meaningful feedback from your SPRING educator.
Cohort capacity may vary slightly by Home Studio depending on the space and number of Reformers available.
-
Yes. Inclusive, adaptable teaching is woven throughout the SPRING curriculum.
You’ll explore inclusive and agency-affirming language, tactile cueing and consent, trauma-aware teaching practices, modifications and progressions, and strategies for adapting movement to different bodies, experiences and needs.
The goal isn’t simply to teach you a list of Reformer exercises. It’s to help you learn how to teach the person in front of you.
-
Full attendance at your Reformer Teaching Labs is required for certification because these sessions include hands-on learning, supervised teaching practice and educator feedback that cannot be fully replaced through independent study.
If illness or unforeseen circumstances mean you need to miss a Teaching Lab, you’ll need to complete the required make-up process. A $200 make-up fee applies for each missed Teaching Lab.
If you miss one or two Teaching Labs, you’ll complete the required Makeup Assignment for each missed Lab.
If you miss three or more Teaching Labs, Makeup Assignments alone are not sufficient and you’ll need to attend the missed Teaching Labs with a future cohort or transfer to a later cohort.
All make-up requirements must be completed within your original 12-month certification timeframe. Please see our Attendance & Make-Up Policy for full details.
After Certification
-
Reformer instructors work across Pilates studios, gyms, fitness and wellness spaces, private sessions and their own businesses.
Many teachers begin by adding a few weekly Reformer classes to their schedule and build from there, while others combine Reformer with Mat or additional Pilates certifications to develop a broader teaching career.
SPRING’s focus on practical teaching experience, adaptable programming and career readiness is designed to help you graduate with skills you can confidently take into professional teaching environments.
-
SPRING graduates are teaching and building careers across the U.S., Australia, Canada, Europe and beyond, in Pilates studios, gyms, fitness and wellness spaces, private settings and their own businesses.
Certification recognition can vary by country, employer and regulatory body, so if you’re planning to teach in a specific location, we recommend checking any local requirements that may apply. Our team is always happy to help you understand how your SPRING Reformer Certification can support your goals.
-
Once you’ve successfully completed your coursework, logbook hours, assessments and graduation requirements, you’ll receive your SPRING Reformer Pilates Certification and be ready to take the next step in your teaching career.
You can begin pursuing Reformer teaching opportunities or continue building your Pilates education through additional SPRING certifications and professional development.
